Shahram Raza Shouq: Small Steps Toward a Thalassaemia-Free Future
Shahram Raza Shouq, President at IFMSA-BAMDC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Yesterday at Multan Garrison Library we launched the first Genetic Literacy and Awareness Program with Thalassaemia International Foundation (TIF-WHO), Hadia foundation and NASL (the first ever in Pakistan).
I spoke on the genetic crisis in Pakistan, followed by powerful insights from Dr Waseem Sattar and Sir Umair Saeed of Hadia Foundation, but it was the thalassaemia fighters who stayed with me most:
‘Every two weeks I wait for a bag of blood to keep living,’ one said, and another reminded us, ‘Screening could have changed my story,’
These sentences translated statistics into human lives with families bearing roughly Rs. 80,000 per patient per year, children missing school and communities stretched thin; what we can do now is clear: donate blood, promote premarital screening, and support local awareness programs so fewer families face this preventable burden.
Muhammad Zain Naveed , Founder of NASL, reminded us of how small steps and granular approach can lead us to a bigger picture by the words.”
