Fadi Alshrouf Explains Red Blood Cell Exchange
Fadi Alshrouf, Senior Apheresis Nurse at King Abdulaziz Medical City, shared on LinkedIn:
”Red Blood Cell (RBC) Exchange
Red blood cell (RBC) exchange, also known as erythrocytapheresis, is a therapeutic procedure in which a patient’s red blood cells are selectively removed and replaced with donor RBCs.
The process is performed using an apheresis machine that separates blood components and allows precise control over the amount of cells exchanged.
RBC exchange is most commonly used in conditions where abnormal or harmful red cells cause complications, such as sickle cell disease, severe malaria, or certain hematologic disorders.
By rapidly reducing the proportion of abnormal RBCs and improving oxygen-carrying capacity, the procedure can relieve symptoms and prevent serious complications like stroke or organ damage.
Compared with simple blood transfusion, RBC exchange minimizes iron overload and allows better control of hematocrit and hemoglobin levels.
Although it requires specialized equipment and trained staff, RBC exchange is considered a safe and effective therapy when performed under proper clinical guidelines.”
