Laurel Brumant-Palmer: Strength in Community – Celebrating Sickle Cell Resilience at Soho

“What an amazing event!
Sickle Cell: Resilience Through the years on Saturday 18th April held at St Annes Church Soho, what a fantastic day.
A day full of exceptional presentations, good food, incredible Patient panelists and an incredible group of attendees, clinicians, patients, carers and researchers.
The morning began with the most relaxing yoga class ever by the wonderful shirleydacosta.
This was most certainly needed to calm the body and mind for the day ahead.
Baba-Jallah Epega The Richard Coker foundation and a member of the sickle cell alliance moderated the first part of the day and Steven Okoli, (Haematology Consultant at The Hammersmith hospital), welcomed all to the event, with a few words, and a huge warm smile.
Tbalogun (poet, author and spoken word performer) shared incredible, inspiring poetry.
Her personality was full of fun, while her words of wisdom were witty but powerful.
Tung Le (Senior clinical research practitioner at the Hammersmith Hospital), introduced the audience to research and projects that were currently opened for the Sickle Cell Community.
This was followed by Sharon Browne-Peter and Ariyikesodeinde sharing their experiences of taking part in clinical trials.
They were then patient panelists along with Tung Le and Camelia Vladescu answering Q and A from the audience.
Thanking Rudi Page FRSA, Drsarahfiner, (professor of Clinical Diabetes, Co lead of Black Health Lecacy), Jael Israel Nutritionist and Holistic teacher , Christiana Dinah (Opthalmologist and director, research and developement LNWH NHS trust), for their incredible presentations.
Their contributions made the day a great success.
Big thank you also to Feyona Daley for moderating the final part of the day, resilience and aging with Sickle Cell, Q and A to the patient panelist Calvin Campbell richard bayliss and Laurel Brumant-Palmer.
The panelists were honest, open vulnerable and we thank them all for sharing their incredible stories, experiences and traumas.
The closing remarks were delivered by Steven Okoli and Olivia Walker as the fantastic and positive event came to an end.
Thanking AuntyMadge caterers for the tasty Caribbean cuisine enjoyed by all for lunch.
