Margret Leosdottir on Statin–Ezetimibe Algorithm Dramatically Improving Post-MI LDL-C Outcomes
Margret Leosdottir, Senior cardiology consultant at Skane University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
”At Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, in November 2022 we launched an algorithm to support our CCU doctors to prescribe lipid-lowering therapy during ACS hospitalization, focused on increasing the use of ezetimibe for patients not expected to reach goal on high-dose atorvastatin alone.
The algorithm was inspired by prior work from France under the lead of Prof François Schiele.
In just a couple of months, at our hospital the proportion of patients reaching LDL-C goal at 2-months post-MI increased from 30% to 55%.
This increase has remained since, with approximately 65% of our patients now at goal at one-year post-MI
Today we launch a new version of the algorithm, switching primary choice of high-intensity statin to rosuvastatin and further adapting recommendations to the 2025 European Society of Cardiology and European Atherosclerosis Society Lipid GL update.
Failure to implement evidence-based medicine is a major cause of concern in today´s healthcare.
Often simple measures like these can carry us a long way, improving prognosis for our patients and making better use of limited healthcare resources.
The example also shows the usefulness of national registries like SWEDEHEART to track progress and benchmark quality improvement efforts at your clinic
