Anas Hamad: Thrombosis as Overlooked Clinical Challenge in APL
Anas Hamad, Deputy Chief of Drug Supply Department, Head of Pharmacy Research Center, Corporate Pharmacy Executive Office at Hamad Medical Corporation, Lead of Health Technology Assessment and Innovation Regulation National Program at Ministry of Public Health – Qatar, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Sage Journals, adding:
“I am pleased to share our recently published study in clinical and applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis Journal by Sage: ‘Beyond Bleeding: Underrecognized Thrombotic Complications in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia — A Single-Center Experience from the GCC Region.’
APL is often recognized for its bleeding risk, but our study highlights another important and sometimes underrecognized clinical challenge: thrombosis.
In this work from the National Center for Cancer Care and Research in Qatar, we reviewed 75 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed APL treated between 2015 and 2024.
We found that 14.7 percent developed thrombosis, with most events occurring during active therapy.
Importantly, this study reinforces that managing APL requires careful attention to both sides of the coagulation spectrum: bleeding and thrombosis.
This balance is particularly critical during induction and early consolidation, where individualized thrombo-hemorrhagic assessment and multidisciplinary decision-making are essential.
Grateful to all the authors team for their great efforts and valuable contributions to this publication.”
