Christopher Cannon Discusses Safe Discontinuation of Anticoagulation After AFib Ablation in a New Study
Christopher Cannon, Cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Heart Letter, posted on LinkedIn:
”In patients s/p AFib ablation who maintain sinus rhythm for more than a year (with good patch monitor documentation), stopping anticoagulation appeared safe.
I (and many of my patients) have been waiting for this trial for a long time – a question that comes up so often.
If stopping, will of course need to maintain vigilance for any late recurrence – then anticoagulation will be needed.
Good discussion and comments here noting caution. It is just one study of 800 patients.
Use of ILR is a terrific way to keep immediate look for recurrences, or Apple Watch could also work.
It also makes sense to incorporate CHAD2-Vasc score in the decision, where if it is low could feel safer stopping but if high, lean more toward current practice of continuing.”
