Antonio Pineda Guerrero: Elevated Lp(a) Raises VTE Risk But Only in the Right Hormonal Context

Antonio Pineda Guerrero, Research Trainee at INIT-UJI, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Daniel Ezzat published in European Heart Journal, adding:

Elevated Lp(a) raises VTE risk but only in the right hormonal context

Prior studies found inconsistent results. The missing variable: Oestrogen.

In the European Heart Journal, data from 373,360 UK Biobank participants (13.6-year follow-up), Lp(a) at or above 125 nmol/L increased VTE risk in premenopausal women (aHR 1.32) and postmenopausal MHT users (aHR 1.48) but not in men or untreated postmenopausal women.

Same molecule. Opposite risk. Depending on hormonal milieu.

Should Lp(a) be part of the conversation before starting hormone therapy?”
