Avidesh Panday: Data-Driven Stroke Care Transformation at EWMSC
Avidesh Panday, Neurologist at Caribbean Neurology Services Limited, Medical Consultant at North Central Regional Health Authority, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article by he and his colleagues co-authored, published in BMC Neurology, adding:
“Stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident) is one of the leading causes of mortality in Trinidad and Tobago. At the EWMSC, Stroke is one of the commonest medical conditions for patients seeking medical care through the Emergency Room.
In order to plan treatment protocols as well as identify treatment gaps both in terms of primary prevention and acute treatments, it is essential to have data driven points of reference.
Dr. Naveen Seecharan, well respected Cardiologist and widely published scholar and myself designed a study to audit our admissions for the year 2023 and look at the demographics and more importantly follow the outcomes of the patients while looking at the radiological investigations. Dr. Nicholas Maraj and myself reviewed every single scan and looked over every patient entry over the year.
We were assisted by a fantastic team of enthusiastic junior doctors who collected data throughout the year.
Truly a team effort. Special mention must be given the Dr. Shastri Motilal who reviewed the paper and was a key cog in data analysis.
What was every more noteworthy – this data revealed that we could do better and in October 2025, through the combined efforts of many, we launched our Acute Stroke Program at the EWMSC. This program has been an overwhelming success with close to 50 patients identified for rapid triage and near to 25 patients receiving acute thrombolytic therapy.
Special mention to the team of Registrars at the Department of Medicine,EWMSC and Dr. Maraj for making this initiative possible.”
