Ben Dowsing: Can Heart Failure Therapy Be Safely Withdrawn After HER2 Cardiotoxicity Recovery

Ben Dowsing, British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Fellow at UCL, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in European Heart Journal, adding:

“Delighted to have presented HER-SAFE as a late breaking clinical trial at ESC 2026.

A first in population randomised controlled trial of heart failure therapy withdrawal in breast cancer survivors with recovered anti-HER2 cardiotoxicity.

HFT withdrawal appears feasible in most, with stable CMR derived cardiac function over 12 months.

Importantly this is first prospective, randomised evidence to guide shared decision making in this growing but often overlooked population.

HFT withdrawal may be an option for most, provided close surveillance is in place and the low risk of reversible, asymptomatic relapse is apparent.

A huge thank you to the participants, BHF and study team without whom this first of its kind work would not have been feasible.
