Britta Engelhardt: How Antigen Presentation Shapes Neuroinflammation in the CNS
Britta Engelhardt, Professor for Immunobiology, Director at University of Bern, Theodor – Kocher – Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn, about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Trends in Immunology, adding:
“I am delighted to share that our review on the role of antigen presentation at the blood-brain barrier in T cell recruitment to the CNS during neuroinflammation.
In this review, we summarize the current state of knowledge, discuss emerging concepts, and share our perspective on how antigen presentation at the blood-brain barrier contributes to immune cell entry into the CNS during neuroinflammation.
For me, this publication also has a personal significance.
I first worked on this topic during my PhD thesis in the late 1980s under the guidance of the late Werner Risau and supervision of Hartmut Wekerle.
Looking back, it is rewarding to see how much the field has advanced over the past decades.
It was a real pleasure to write this review together with my former PhD students Sidar Aydin and Javier Pareja, as well as with Roland Liblau, with whom we have enjoyed a long-standing collaboration.
The illustrations were beautifully created by former BtRAIN student Sabela Rodriguez-Lorenzo who has become a science illustrator.
A special thank goes to Sidar, who kept us all focused throughout the writing process.
I hope this review will be useful to colleagues working on neuroimmunology, the blood-brain barrier, and CNS inflammation.”
