Bruno Pougault: Evidence-Based Guidance for Perioperative Bleeding Management

Bruno Pougault, Global Marketing Hemostasis Product Manager at HORIBA ABX SAS, shared a post on LinkedIn  about a recent article by Jerrold H. Levy et al, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis:

” Advancing perioperative bleeding management through evidence and expert guidance

I am pleased to share this important new guidance from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Perioperative and Critical Care Thrombosis and Hemostasis, recently published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis:

‘Use of factor concentrates for the management of perioperative bleeding: guidance from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Perioperative and Critical Care Thrombosis and Hemostasis‘.

Perioperative bleeding remains a major clinical challenge, particularly in cardiac surgery, trauma, obstetrics and organ transplantation. Its management is complex because acquired coagulopathy can involve multiple mechanisms, including blood loss, hemodilution, hypothermia, acidosis, fibrinolysis, inflammation, and consumption of coagulation factors and platelets.

From a scientific and laboratory perspective, this guidance is particularly relevant.
It highlights the growing role of coagulation factor concentrates within perioperative bleeding management algorithms, including their rapid availability, standardized dosing, lower infusion volumes and pathogen inactivation.

More broadly, it reinforces an important principle in modern hemostasis: managing major bleeding requires us to connect clinical assessment, timely coagulation testing and targeted therapeutic strategies.

This interaction between laboratory medicine and clinical decision-making is critical to help provide the right information, at the right time, to support the management of bleeding patients.

Many congratulations and sincere thanks to the authors and the ISTH SSC experts for bringing together the available evidence and their expertise in this valuable guidance for the thrombosis and hemostasis community.”
