Carl Allen: New AAP Guidance Updates Pediatric Iron Deficiency Screening and Treatment

Carl Allen, Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jacquelyn M. Powers et al, published in Pediatrics, adding:

”Iron deficiency remains one of the most common nutritional deficiencies affecting children and adolescents, yet it is often underrecognized until symptoms become more significant.

The first major update to pediatric iron deficiency guidance in nearly a decade addresses that challenge through expanded screening and treatment recommendations.

Jacquelyn Powers, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Section Chief of Hematology at Baylor College of Medicine, served as a lead author of the report.

It was published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the July 2026 issue of Pediatrics.

The updated guidance includes risk-based screening with complete blood count and ferritin testing, universal screening for menstruating adolescents, preventive supplementation for high-risk infants, and revised treatment recommendations across infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

By shifting the focus toward earlier identification and intervention, the report provides clinicians with practical tools to help prevent iron deficiency from progressing to anemia.”
