Fernanda Orsi Explores Brazilian Registry of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
Fernanda Orsi, Associate Professor at Faculty of Medical Sciences, Unicamp, shared on LinkedIn:
”I am always happy to share my work and new insightful publications.
However, this one comes with a bitter taste.
In this prospective study, we show that the diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) in Brazil are more than 10 years outdated, negatively affecting disease prognosis.
Forty percent of patients don’t have access to ADAMTS13 testing; more than 10% don’t receive therapeutic plasma exchange, and half don’t receive rituximab.
In-hospital mortality is high (15%). TTP management is still challenging in Brazil, as it likely is in other low- and middle-income countries.
It is difficult to look at these numbers and not call for action, both to promote medical education for earlier recognition of the disease and to improve access to appropriate healthcare.”
