Ghanim Fajish: Vascular Cells May Retain a Prothrombotic Memory of Oxidative Stress

Ghanim Fajish, Postdoctoral Scientist at UMR 1116 INSERM-UL DCAC, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH Journal, adding:

“‘Can cells in our blood vessel walls ‘remember’ an episode of oxidative stress?’

I’m pleased to share that our recent abstract, presented at the ISTH 2026 Congress, has now been published in the Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis supplement.

In this study, we investigated mechanisms contributing to the prothrombotic phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

We found that oxidative stress induced by hemin exposure triggers an epigenetic response associated with persistent, NF-κB-dependent upregulation of tissue factor, consistent with the establishment of a phenotypic memory in these cells.

This work represents an early step in our ongoing investigation of vascular epigenetic memory, which we are now extending through broader chromatin and multi-omic approaches.

I’m grateful to Dr. Véronique Regnault, Dr. Patrick Lacolley, and all co-authors for their collaboration and contributions.”
