Irtiza Hasan: AI-Predicted Erythropoietin Dosing Matches Physician-Guided Dosing

Irtiza Hasan, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Florida College of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Lee-Moay Lim et al., published in JAMIA Open, adding:

“A new trial pitted an AI model against a nephrologist’s judgment on anemia dosing in dialysis. It held up.

In a randomized, double-blinded trial, AI-predicted erythropoietin dosing was compared to physician-guided dosing in hemodialysis patients on hemoglobin control. One of four AI models tested, REEM trees, proved non-inferior to physicians, with no difference in serious adverse events.

I manage UF’s Home Hemodialysis Program, where anemia dosing is one of the most repetitive decisions we make. This is early evidence AI can match physician judgment on this task, not that it should replace it.

Where should AI sit in ESA dosing, second opinion or default?”
