Understanding Recovery After Pulmonary Embolism – ISTH
International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Simon Wolf et al, published in JTH, adding:
“DYK:
Up to 50 percent of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) may experience some degree of long term functional impairment, with symptoms including shortness of breath, reduced exercise tolerance and deconditioning that can persist for months or even years.
Post PE syndrome can also extend beyond physical symptoms.
Depression, anxiety and other psychosocial complications may significantly affect quality of life following PE.
A new Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) in Clinic review examines what we currently know about recovery after acute PE, including:
- The course of recovery following PE
- Determinants associated with poor long term outcomes
- Persistent changes in pulmonary and cardiac function
- Physical and psychosocial components of post PE syndrome
- Potential interventions to improve recovery and quality of life
While awareness of post PE complications has grown, important questions remain about why symptoms persist and how they can best be prevented and managed.
