James P. Crowley: How Collaboration and Long-Term Research Led to a Nobel Prize–Winning Discovery by Harvey Alter
James P. Crowley, Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Brown University, Captain at U.S. Navy Reserve, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Harvey J. Alter et al. published in Hepatology, adding:
“Great and funny short autobiography by Harvey Alter MD who was a young director of Hematology research at Georgetown and with whom I took an elective in my senior year in medical school.
Harvey first got me interested in transfusion medicine and hematology and later at the NIH was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of hepatitis C.
He is not only a very talented researcher but also a very funny guy!
‘My composite of awards (over the years) leaves me with pangs of guilt that I have been singled out for accomplishments that were achieved only through vital collaborations.’
‘I owe everything to these collaborations and the associated investigators. Perhaps my main strength is that I chose my collaborators well and then built lifelong friendships with most of them. I also chose my venue well.’
‘No place but the NIH Intramural Research Program would have funded my incredibly long-term prospective studies (on transfusion related hepatitis) whose outcomes were otherwise wholly unpredictable.’
‘These were not the fodder of RO-1 grants, but the nurturing of unfettered exploration that is the unique quality of the NIH.’
‘The stimulating, supportive confines of the NIH have been the right niche for me.’
Harvey Alter.”
