Jim Hoffman: NETosis Dysregulation Links Cancer Progression and Autoimmunity
Jim Hoffman, Former Technical Advisor at Cygnus Technologies, LLC, posted on LinkedIn:
“‘These findings suggest that germline-encoded anti-NMDAR antibodies contribute to immune surveillance but can also trigger autoimmune disease after maturation, revealing a mechanistic trade-off between cancer immunity and neurotoxicity.’ Janowitz et al 2026
Can extracorporeal NET removal therapy help keep both cancer progression and anti-NMDR autoimmunity in remission by improving innate immune system macrophage-mediated phagocytosis/efferocytosis that is likely compromised by having too many NETs and extracellular chromatin in the blood circulation?
Cancer progression and anti-NMDR autoimmunity have both been shown to result in NETosis dysregulation (hyper-NET induction and impaired NET clearance) that positively correlates with the severity of both diseases.
NETosis: A bridge between cancer and autoimmunity
‘Cancer and autoimmunity crosstalk have been well-established. Cancer-induced autoimmunity is associated with the onset of several autoimmune disorders, including rheumatic diseases and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, among others.’
Neutrophil extracellular traps: New players in cancer research
Reviewed by Jin et al 2022
The plasma’s obtained from Anti-NMDA receptor patients exacerbates NETosis dysregulation, NETosis induction, and these patients also demonstrate impaired NET clearance.
