Jonathan Penm: Antithrombotic Stewardship Optimizes VTE Prophylaxis in ICU Patients
Jonathan Penm, Associate Professor at University of Sydney, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Thrombosis Research, adding:
“I am pleased to share our new paper led by Julianne Chong: Retrospective review of a novel antithrombotic stewardship program in an Australian intensive care unit.
Patients in intensive care are at high risk of both bleeding and thrombosis, and anticoagulants are among the medicines most often associated with preventable harm.
Antithrombotic stewardship is an established organisational strategy in hospitals, but its acceptance in critical care had not been examined.
We found rcommendations were made in 35% of reviews, and 82% of recommendations were accepted.
Most recommendations were treatment changes, chiefly VTE prophylaxis initiation and optimisation of the prophylactic agent.
