Incremental Mobility and Venous Thromboembolism Risk in Hospitalized Medical Patients – JTH

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Erik H. Hoyer et all, adding:

“Every step counts: incremental mobility and venous thromboembolism risk among adult general medicine inpatients

In a retrospective cohort of 25,763 adult medicine inpatients at two academic centers, 169 developed symptomatic, radiologically confirmed venous thromboembolism during admission.

Lower mobility over the preceding three days was associated with progressively higher subsequent VTE rates.

The association persisted after adjustment for clinical factors and prescribed prophylaxis.

These findings highlight information lost when mobility is reduced to a binary risk-score item.

They do not establish that increasing mobility alone prevents VTE or replaces pharmacologic prophylaxis.
