Khaled Musallam: De-LIGHT Study Reveals Age-Related Multisystem Morbidity in β-Thalassemia

Khaled Musallam, Group Chief Research Officer at Burjeel Holdings, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Haematologica, adding:

“Pleased to share our new study out today in Haematologica:

‘β-thalassemia as a progressive disease: age-related morbidity in the de-LIGHT study.’

Our findings highlight an important shift in how we think about β-thalassemia: as patients live longer, multisystem morbidity progressively accumulates across the lifespan, in both transfusion-dependent and non-transfusion-dependent disease.

These data reinforce the importance of lifelong disease control, age-adapted surveillance, and (hopefully when available) earlier use of disease-modifying approaches before irreversible complications develop.”
