Marco Spagnolo: Catheter-Based LAAC vs. Oral Anticoagulation

Marco Spagnolo, Associate Editor at EuroIntervention Case Reports, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in JAMA Cardiology, adding:

“We tried to bring some clarity to the growing body of evidence comparing catheter-based left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) with oral anticoagulation (OAC) for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Beyond the numerical results summarized in this slide, I believe that two key factors – one preprocedural and one postprocedural – may be central to translating these findings into clinical practice and defining priorities for future research:

  1. Patient selection (presence, nature, and severity of OAC intolerance or contraindications);
  2. The antithrombotic strategy adopted after LAAC.

Both warrant prospective investigation in dedicated randomized clinical trials.

The full manuscript is available in JAMA Cardiology

Congratulations to my co-authors, Claudio and Kamil, and special thanks to Prof. Capodanno for his mentorship.”
