Mishal Khan: Long-Term Mortality Trends and Demographic Disparities in Patients With PE and AF
Mishal Khan, President VFAHT-FMC at Infection Prevention and Control Foundation and Vice President FMC LC at IFMSA-Pakistan, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Arrhythmia, adding:
“Excited to share our latest publication in the Journal of Arrhythmia:
‘Trends and Disparities in Mortality due to Pulmonary Embolism Among Adults With Atrial Fibrillation From 1999 to 2020: Insights From the CDC WONDER Database’
Using over two decades of national mortality data, our study is among the first to characterize long-term mortality trends and demographic disparities in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) and coexisting atrial fibrillation (AF).
We found that PE-related mortality in patients with AF has risen significantly since 2009, with disproportionately higher mortality among men, rural populations, and certain geographic regions.
These findings highlight important inequities in cardiovascular outcomes and identify populations that may benefit from targeted prevention and healthcare interventions.
Beyond describing trends, our work provides a foundation for future research exploring the drivers of these disparities, including anticoagulation access and adherence, healthcare infrastructure, and socioeconomic factors.
It also supports the need for policies that strengthen AF screening, improve access to specialized cardiovascular care in underserved regions, and expand telemedicine-based anticoagulation management.
Grateful to all my co-authors for their incredible collaboration throughout this project.”
