Morgan Fogarty: A New Era of Continuous Bedside Brain Monitoring After Stroke
Morgan Fogarty, Senior Engineer at EsperImage, Imaging Science PhD at Washington University in St. Louis, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Neurophotonics, adding:
”Detecting neurological changes early after a stroke is vital for patient recovery.
Our research shows that bedside optical brain imaging has the potential to enable continuous, real-time monitoring to spot early signs of decline.
Here, we developed a portable, high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) system that can be used right at the ICU bedside.
We measured brain connectivity in stroke patients and used a functional connectivity metric that captured neurological disruption, which strongly correlated with the NIH Stroke Scale.
This advance brings us closer to continuous, point-of-care brain monitoring, giving clinicians a new tool to guide acute stroke management and improve patient outcomes.”
