Mostafa Faisal: Donor Type and Long-Term Quality of Life After HCT for Severe Aplastic Anemia

Mostafa Faisal, Associate Professor of Clinical Hematology and HSCT at Assiut University, shared a post on X about a recent article by Matty Slaught et al., published in Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, adding:

“Comparison of Late Effects and Quality of Life by Donor Type in Long-Term Survivors of Severe Aplastic Anemia after Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

Long-term SAA HCT survivors:

  • 122 survivors; median 26 years after HCT
  • 49% employed full-time, 24% part-time
  • Common late effects: sexual dysfunction 35%, cataracts 20%, low bone density 20%
  • 34% required antihypertensive therapy

Alternative-donor HCT associated with more musculoskeletal problems (OR 9.9)

SF-36 physical 49.5 and mental 49.9, essentially identical to population norms

No major QOL differences by donor type

Lifelong surveillance remains essential, but long-term QOL is reassuring.”
