Moti Haim: Transforming AF Care in the Elderly

Moti Haim, Professor and Director of Cardiology at Soroka Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in BMJ Journals, adding:

”Excited to share our new nationwide study, just published in BMJ Open!

We analyzed a decade of electronic health records (2010–2020) for 45,820 elderly patients (median age 83) with atrial fibrillation to look at real-world trends and clinical outcomes during the DOAC era.

Key findings:

Practice Shift: Initial OAC prescriptions grew from 31 percent in 2010 (all warfarin) to 66 percent in 2019 (mostly DOACs).

DOAC Benefits: DOAC use was associated with lower risks of ischemic stroke and gastrointestinal bleeding compared to non-users.

DOACs vs. Warfarin: DOACs outperformed warfarin across stroke, bleeding, and mortality outcomes.

Mortality Risk: Patients receiving no OAC therapy faced the highest mortality rates.

I am very proud of this work and want to congratulate and thank my brilliant co-authors. It has been a true privilege working with such a dedicated team.”
