Nasim Hosseini: Women’s Blood Donation and the Social Determinants of Health
Nasim Hosseini, Head of International Affairs Department at IBTO, shared a post on LinkedIn about her recent article, published in International Journal for Equity in Health, adding:
“I am delighted to share that my manuscript, ‘Beyond Anemia: Gendered Social and Structural Determinants of Women’s Blood Donation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Scoping Review’ has been published in the International Journal for Equity in Health.
This work began with a simple question:
Can women’s underrepresentation in blood donation really be explained by anemia and individual barriers alone?
The review suggests that the answer is more complex.
Women’s participation in blood donation is shaped not only by biomedical eligibility, but also by gender norms and autonomy, mobility & caregiving responsibilities, access to services, and the design of blood-donation systems.
To achieve true health equity, we need to look beyond the individual and address the structural and social determinants that create these disparities.”
