Nicolas Schommer: When Neutrophils Turn Metabolic Stress Into Organ Injury

Nicolas Schommer, Postdoctoral Researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Ragnhild Helseth et al., published in European Heart Journal, adding:

“Very happy to see our recent work in the European Heart Journal discussed in a thoughtful accompanying editorial by Ragnhild Helseth, Juan Badimon, and Carlos G Santos-Gallego.

One idea emerging from our work is that neutrophils activated in diabetes and hyperglycemia may not simply reflect systemic inflammation, but actively propagate it to distant organs.

Through the interplay of PAD4, inflammasome activation, and NET formation, these cells may help translate a systemic metabolic disturbance into inflammatory and fibrotic injury in the heart and kidney.

This also leaves us with an exciting question that we are continuing to explore: what makes certain organs susceptible to injury from these activated neutrophils? In other words, if the neutrophil is the ‘seed,’ what defines the permissive vascular and tissue ‘soil’?
