Nour Al-Mozain: The Evolving Role of Apheresis Across Clinical Practice
Nour Al-Mozain, Hemopathologist, Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in CA, adding:
“Our latest publication from American Society for Apheresis , Attending Physician Subcommittee: An Annual Review of Important Apheresis Articles in 2025, published in the CA.
ECP in lung transplantation was among the most exciting themes highlighted in this year’s review, with emerging evidence suggesting a shift toward earlier, prophylactic use to prevent rejection and improve graft survival.
Two randomized studies highlighted the potential of ECP as a prophylactic strategy, rather than solely a treatment for established rejection.
One study demonstrated significant reductions in acute rejection, CLAD, serious infections, and overall AEs when ECP was added to standard immunosuppression.
Another trial in cystic fibrosis lung transplant recipients showed that induction ECP was safe, feasible, and associated with favorable immunologic changes and improved lung function.
Other important studies featured in the review included:
- Multidisciplinary TTP pathways that dramatically reduced relapse and mortality
- Long-term lipoprotein apheresis data showing sustained cardiovascular benefit over 12 years
- Use of peripheral arterial line in pediatric plasma exchange that may reduce the need for central venous access
- Randomized evidence helping define the role—and limitations—of plasma exchange in Long COVID and ANCA-associated vasculitis.”
