Rania Baleela: Evaluating Bedside Diagnostics and VICC Outcomes in Hemotoxic Snakebite

Rania Baleela, Associate Professor of Molecular Biology at Faculty of Science, University of Khartoum, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am pleased to share our newly published open-access study in Tropical Medicine and Health.

‘Outcomes of venom-induced consumption coagulopathy following snakebite envenoming in Sudan: a cohort study.”

Snakebite envenoming remains an important but under-recognised public health problem in Sudan.

In this hospital-based cohort of 119 snakebite patients, we found that 80.7% developed venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC).

Among patients with VICC:

  • 88.5% experienced spontaneous bleeding
  • 30.2% developed severe haemorrhage, most commonly intracerebral bleeding
  • 29.4% of all patients developed acute kidney injury
  • 30.2% of patients with VICC died in hospital
  • The 20-minute whole blood clotting test (WBCT20) showed 100% sensitivity for VICC in this cohort, supporting its value as an accessible bedside screening tool, while laboratory confirmation remains important.

These findings highlight the substantial clinical burden of haemotoxic snakebite in Sudan and the urgent need to strengthen snakebite surveillance, access to appropriate antivenom, diagnostic capacity, and evidence-based clinical management.
