Rizwan Ullah: Managing Severe Tirofiban-Induced Thrombocytopenia
Rizwan Ullah, Cardiologist at Ministry of Health and Prevention – UAE, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Pakistan Heart Journal, adding:
“Excited to share another academic milestone!
I’m delighted to announce that our case report has been published in the Pakistan Heart Journal.
Tirofiban-Induced Severe Thrombocytopenia Following Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Case Report
As interventional cardiologists, we often focus on preventing thrombotic complications during primary PCI.
However, this case is a powerful reminder that life-threatening complications can arise from the very therapies we rely on.
In our patient with anterior STEMI, the platelet count plummeted from 211 × 10⁹/L to just 6 × 10⁹/L within 9 hours of tirofiban administration.
Rapid recognition, prompt discontinuation of the drug, and treatment with IVIG resulted in complete recovery without major bleeding or thrombotic events.
Key clinical takeaways:
- Always monitor platelet counts early after initiating GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors.
- Consider tirofiban-induced immune thrombocytopenia when platelet counts fall abruptly.
- Early diagnosis and multidisciplinary management can be lifesaving.
- IVIG may play an important role in severe immune-mediated cases.
This publication reflects the dedication of an outstanding multidisciplinary team.
I’m grateful to my co-authors and colleagues for their expertise, collaboration, and commitment to advancing patient care.
Every published case has the potential to help another clinician make the right decision at the right time—and ultimately save a life. That’s the true value of sharing clinical experience.
Thank you to the editorial team and reviewers of the Pakistan Heart Journal for this opportunity.
I’d be happy to hear your thoughts or experiences with GP IIb/IIIa inhibitor-induced thrombocytopenia in your practice.”
