Safa Chenganath: Stenosis vs Thrombosis – Hemodialysis Vascular Access
Safa Chenganath, Dialysis technologist at Ponnani Municipal Dialysis and Research Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Not every access problem looks the same – and knowing the difference between stenosis and thrombosis can be the line between saving an access and losing it.
Stenosis is a gradual narrowing of the vessel.
It builds slowly: reduced flow, rising venous pressure, harder cannulation, longer bleeding after needle removal. Left unchecked, it’s often the setup for a clot.
Thrombosis is sudden – a clot blocking the lumen outright.
Flow drops or stops, the thrill goes weak or disappears, and dialysis becomes difficult or impossible.
This one doesn’t wait; it needs urgent assessment.
The two are connected – stenosis is frequently the underlying cause of thrombosis – which is exactly why catching the narrowing early matters so much.
Early recognition of access dysfunction can help prevent access loss.
That’s not just a slide bullet – it’s the difference between a quick intervention and a patient losing their access altogether.
Sharing this as a quick visual reference for fellow dialysis techs and nurses.
What signs do you rely on most to catch access dysfunction early?”
