Shehab Mohamed: Recognizing Isolated Thrombocytopenia as a Presentation of MDS

Shehab Mohamed, Hematologist at hammed Medical Corporation, shared a post on Linkedin about recent article  he and his colleauges co-authored, published in Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy, adding:

“Here we go !

Pleased to share our newly published review:

‘Myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms presenting with isolated thrombocytopenia: a poorly understood pathophysiology, difficult to diagnose, and challenging to treat entity’

Published in Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy.

In this review, we explore MDS presenting with isolated thrombocytopenia (MDS-IT)—an uncommon and often underrecognized phenotype that can closely mimic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). We discuss its pathophysiology, diagnostic challenges, distinction from ITP and CCUS, the significance of isolated del(20q), and current therapeutic considerations.

I am grateful to all my co-authors for their valuable contributions and collaboration.

A special thank you to Amer Zeidan and Jan Philipp Bewersdorf from Yale School of Medicine for their supervision, mentorship, and invaluable guidance throughout this work and my colleague Mohammed Elmourtada Abdulgayoom Abdulrahman Al-Mashdali Rowan Mesilhy

I hope this review contributes to greater recognition of this challenging MDS phenotype and helps stimulate further research in an area where important diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties remain.”
