Thierry Burnouf: Platelet-Derived Products as Acellular Biotherapies for Neurological Disorders

Thierry Burnouf, Vice-Dean, Distinguished Professor, Biomedical Engineering at Taipei Medical University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

I am pleased to share our new review in Trends in Molecular Medicine:

‘Platelet-derived and platelet secretome biotherapies for precision neuromedicine’.

In this article, we discuss how platelet-derived products, including platelet lysates, secretome fractions, and extracellular vesicles, may offer a new platform for the development of acellular biotherapies for neurological disorders.

Their multimodal composition may help address complex disease mechanisms involving neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, synaptic dysfunction, and impaired neurogenesis.

The review also discusses how omics-guided fractionation and pre-clinical data, biomarker development, and imaging approaches may help move these products toward more precise and standardized clinical applications.

Many thanks to all co-authors (MingLi Chou, David Blum, Fabrice Cognasse, Grégory Kuchcinski, David Devos, Thierry Burnouf) involved in this work, and in the pre-clinical and clinical development of platelet biotherapies for the treatment of brain diseases.”
