Tom Langenaeken: Targeting Factor XI in Mechanical Heart Valve Thrombosis

Tom Langenaeken, Resident Cardiac Surgery at Catharina Ziekenhuis, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis & Haemostasis, adding:

“Our paper on Factor XI inhibition with gruticibart (AB023) for mechanical heart valve thrombosis is now published in Blood Vessels, Thrombosis & Haemostasis.

In a porcine pulmonary valve model, gruticibart achieved 100% valve patency without bleeding events at three months despite IV administration only once every 2 weeks.

A result we believe makes a compelling case for FXI as the target antithrombotic strategy in mechanical valve recipients.

This pilot study is the foundation for a larger follow-up series, which we are pleased to pursue with support from the Foundation for Cardiac Surgery.
