The DETECT-VTE Study Reminds Us That VTE Doesn’t Always Look Typical – RPTH

”Many patients with VTE don’t follow the textbook.
The DETECT-VTE audit of UK general practice found that nearly half of VTE diagnoses were initiated in primary care, yet 62% of patients had multiple healthcare visits before diagnosis.
While classic symptoms such as a swollen painful calf or breathlessness remained common, presentations varied widely, including asymptomatic cases, many detected during cancer investigations.
A timely reminder that VTE should remain on the differential, even when the presentation is atypical or vital signs are normal.”
