Wolfgang Miesbach: Is Bone Health a Silent Comorbidity In Haemophilia and VWD?

Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Divyaswathi Citla-Sridhar et al, published in Blood Advances, adding։

”Bone health: a silent comorbidity in haemophilia and VWD?

New data (n=109: 34 haemophilia A/B, 45 VWD—mainly type 1, 30 controls) show low BMD/BMC in both haemophilia and VWD, with particularly low BMD Z‑scores in VWD despite modern care.
B

MD (bone mineral density) reflects how tightly packed the minerals are in the bone (linked to fracture risk), while BMC (bone mineral content) is the total amount of mineral in the bone, measured in grams.

A BMD Z‑score tells you how far a person’s BMD is above or below the average for their age, sex, and ethnicity; negative values mean ‘thinner’ bones than expected for age.

  • Lower bone density (BMD/BMC) in haemophilia and VWD
  • Higher thrombin AUC – higher BMD Z‑scores
  • Higher plasmin AUC – lower BMD Z‑scores
  • Physical activity – better bone outcomes

This strengthens the view that bone health should be a routine target in comprehensive care for haemophilia and VWD, not just a ‘silent’ comorbidity.

Congratulations to Divyaswathi Citla Sridhar, Jin-Ran Chen and co-authors on this important study!”
