Zehra Demirci on Diagnostic Challenges and Clinical Implications in Polycythemia Vera
Zehra Demirci, Medical Student at Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:
”I am thrilled to share a significant milestone in my academic journey: the publication of my first-ever article as a lead author in Expert Review of Hematology.
In this editorial, we provide a comprehensive overview of “Masked Polycythemia Vera,” defining it as a distinct presentation where patients exhibit the molecular and histologic features of PV despite having normal or borderline hemoglobin levels.
We discuss how various confounding factors—ranging from iron deficiency and occult bleeding to hemoglobinopathies—can obscure the diagnosis by suppressing red cell parameters.
Furthermore, we address the critical clinical implications, emphasizing that these “masked” patients often face a higher risk of thrombotic events and disease progression due to delayed recognition and undertreatment.
Finally, we emphasize the importance of evolving towards personalized treatment approaches and a comprehensive diagnostic model combining molecular and morphological insights to ensure early detection and improved prognosis.
It was a privilege to share the first authorship of this work with my dear colleague Zeynep Aslı Durak.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to her for this great partnership and to our mentor Ahmet Emre Eşkazan for his invaluable guidance throughout the process.”
