Inflammation: How VWF Influences Neutrophil Function
Hamideh Yadegari, Senior Scientist, University Clinic Bonn, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’m happy to share our latest study, just published in Haematologica.
Even though the early view of this paper has been available since the beginning of the year, I’m pleased that it is now accessible in its final full-text journal format.
There is a growing body of evidence showing that von Willebrand factor (VWF) plays roles beyond hemostasis, particularly in inflammation. Its function appears to be quite complex—ranging from intracellular effects, such as the formation of Weibel Palade bodies, to interactions with macrophages and its elevated levels observed in various inflammatory disorders.
In this study, we show for the first time that even circulating VWF can interact directly with neutrophils, influence their behavior, and become internalized. This suggests a novel mechanism by which VWF may modulate neutrophil function and contribute to its own clearance from the bloodstream.”
