Ouma Oluga Unveiled Plans to Make Sickle Cell Screening Mandatory in Kenya at 80th UN General Assembly

”Kenya’s Bold Step Against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)

At the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA), Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services unveiled plans to make sickle cell screening mandatory in routine maternal and child health visits.

Why it matters:

  • Every year, around 14,000 children in Kenya are born with sickle cell disease — up to 90% do not reach their 5th birthday.
  • Earlyscreening and care can change this story.
  • Kenya is taking action with national guidelines, infant screening policies, and new health financing funds to cut out-of-pocket costs.

As Dr. Oluga reminded the world, sickle cell has been neglected for too long.

This is more than Kenya’s fight- it is a call to Africa and the world: no child should be left behind.”
