”Mechanical valves require effective anticoagulant treatment to prevent thrombosis.
Alain Carpentier, who was still assistant head of clinic, proposed to use first porcine heterografts and then calf pericardium to replace the valves of the heart in order to treat patients who could not be anticoagulated and those in whom biological monitoring was problematic.
This technique has become the treatment of choice for severe valvular heart disease. It is also now applied to the TAVI technique… The incredible history of medicine.
