Deanna Joseph: Feeling Inspired and Deeply Grateful After Attending the 2025 HTRS SEARCH Workshop
Deanna Joseph, Graduating Senior Health Science major on a pre-medical track at Howard University, shared on LinkedIn:
”Feeling inspired and deeply grateful after attending the 2025 HTRS SEARCH (Students Exploring Academic Research Careers in Hematology) Workshop in Milwaukee, WI!
This workshop, hosted by the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society (HTRS), gathered a remarkable group of students, mentors, and physician-scientists who share a dedication to advancing hematology and improving patient outcomes.
Over the course of the weekend, I learned about:
• The importance of mentorship and representation in medicine
• Clinical and translational hematology research
• Careers as physician-scientists and the impact of discovery-based research
• Hands-on demos at the Versiti Blood Research Institute (BRI)
One of my favorite parts of the event was our charity give-back night, where we partnered with Kids Matter Inc to build stuffed animals for children in need — a beautiful reminder that compassion is at the heart of science and medicine.
As someone with a personal connection to individuals living with sickle cell disease, this experience truly resonated with me.
Hearing from clinicians and researchers working toward better treatments and quality of life for patients strengthened my passion for pursuing a career in pediatrics and hematology.
I left Milwaukee inspired, empowered, and even more committed to becoming a physician who combines empathy, advocacy, and innovation to make a difference in the lives of patients and families.
