Mohannad G Abdelgader: Understanding Thrombosis – Silent But Serious

Mohannad G Abdelgader, Director at Abdulla Fouad Group-Hakeem Laboratories, shared on LinkedIn:

”Understanding Thrombosis: Silent but Serious

Thrombosis, the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel, can lead to life-threatening conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke. Early recognition, prevention, and management are key to reducing morbidity and mortality.

Common Risk Factors:
• Prolonged immobility (e.g., long flights, hospitalization)
• Surgery or trauma
• Cancer and chemotherapy
• Genetic clotting disorders (e.g., Factor V Leiden)
• Obesity, smoking, and pregnancy
• Hormonal therapies (e.g., oral contraceptives)

Signs and Symptoms:
• Swelling, redness, warmth, and pain in limbs (DVT)
• Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or rapid heart rate (PE)
• Neurological deficits such as weakness, numbness, or vision problems (stroke)

Prevention and Management:
• Encourage mobility and physical activity
• Use of compression stockings or prophylactic anticoagulation in high-risk patients
• Prompt diagnosis using Doppler ultrasound or imaging
• Early initiation of anticoagulants or thrombolytic therapy

Thrombosis is preventable, yet underrecognized.

Awareness and timely intervention save lives.”
