Ney Carter Borges: How RSV Hospitalization is Linked to Sharp Rise in Heart Attack and Stroke Risk
Ney Carter Borges, Member Cardiologist of Global Physician Association at Cleveland Clinic Florida, posted on LinkedIn about a recent article by Caihua Liang et al, published in JAMA Network:
”Risk of Cardiorespiratory Events Following RSV-Related Hospitalization
Key Findings (Adults, n = 11,887):
- Myocardial Infarction: IRR 8.7 (95% CI 6.7–11.2) in days 1–7; risk remains elevated up to 63 days
- Stroke: IRR 7.4 (95% CI 5.5–10.1) in days 1–7; persists up to 63 days
- CHF Exacerbation: IRR 12.5 (95% CI 10.5–14.8) in days 1–7; elevated up to 84 days
- COPD Exacerbation: IRR 23.1 (95% CI 20.2–26.5) in days 1–7; sharp early peak
- Arrhythmia: IRR 16.5 (95% CI 14.5–18.7) in days 1–7; elevated up to 42 days
Design: Self-controlled case series (2017–2024)
Adjustment: Age, RSV seasonality, influenza, and COVID-19 activity
Clinical Message: RSV-related hospitalization is associated with a marked early surge in major cardiovascular and respiratory events, with clinically relevant risk persisting for weeks to months, reinforcing RSV prevention and vaccination strategies in adults.”
