Mashukur Rahman: New ESC Dyslipidemia Updates Expand the Role of Statins
Mashukur Rahman, Resident Doctor at Bangladesh Medical University, Medical Officer at Directorate General of Health Services, shared a post on LinkedIn.
“Many doctors still think statins are only for high LDL cholesterol.
But the new ESC dyslipidemia updates suggest a bigger role.
Why this matters now:
- Statins may help protect the heart in some cancer patients.
Some chemotherapy drugs like anthracyclines can cause heart failure years later. Preventive statin use is getting stronger support. - We are moving from treating numbers to treating overall risk.
Risk builds silently, even when LDL is not very high.
In real life, we often wait for LDL to cross a ‘clear cutoff.’
But by then, damage may already be starting.
If statins are becoming broader heart-protection drugs — when should we start them in borderline-risk patients?”
