Tagreed Alkaltham: Strengthening Blood Inventory Governance Through RFID Technology
Tagreed Alkaltham, Transfusion Medicine Lab Supervisor at KSMC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today, I had the opportunity to present ‘Pilot Implementation of RFID Technology for Blood Inventory and Patient Safety‘ at the Blood Utilization Committee (BUC).
This initiative represents a collaborative project between King Saud Medical City (KSMC) and the Saudi Ministry of Health, aimed at strengthening blood inventory management and enhancing patient safety through improved traceability and real-time monitoring.
The proposed RFID system supports:
- Real-time visibility of blood unit location within storage areas
- Monitoring single and cumulative out of refrigerator time
- Expiry alerts to optimize stock utilization
- Enhanced traceability from Blood Bank to clinical areas
- PDA-based verification of patient identity against the assigned blood unit
RFID technology shifts transfusion practice from manual tracking to intelligent system based assurance, embedding visibility, compliance, and safety into every step of the process.
This is far more than a technical enhancement.
It represents a strategic investment in patient safety, operational excellence, and governance maturity.
Because in transfusion medicine, safety is not assumed, it is designed into the system.”
