Favour Felix-Ilemhenbhio: Parental Hypoxia Exposure Enhances Offspring Resilience to Stroke
Favour Felix-Ilemhenbhio, Research Fellow at Neuroscience Institute at The University of Sheffield, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”I’m pleased to share our latest research published in Stroke.
We found that when parent mice were exposed to brief, controlled periods of low oxygen before having offspring, their adult offspring were significantly more resilient to stroke.
They developed smaller areas of brain damage and less swelling after an induced stroke compared to controls.
In simple terms, a protective environmental exposure in parents appeared to pass on resilience to the next generation.
While this is an early-stage, preclinical study, it raises fascinating questions about how parental experiences might shape brain health in offspring.
Understanding these mechanisms could eventually help us identify new ways to reduce stroke severity.”
