Cheng-Hock Toh: The Paradox of Hematology
Cheng-Hock Toh, Chair at National Blood Transfusion Committee,Professor of Medical Haematology at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and Elisabeth Buggins co-authored, adding:
“The Visibility Problem
The Paradox of Hematology:
Because it is involved in everything, it is recognised in nothing.
- Abnormal bloods? ‘Ask haematology.’
- Clotting issue? ‘Ask haematology.’
- Transfusion problem? ‘Haematology should fix it.’
- Chemotherapy complication? ‘Haematology input needed.’
Yet haematology is rarely present in:
- digital design discussions
- workforce planning
- strategic NHS conversations
This invisibility has consequences — for safety, staffing and sustainability.
- We saw this clearly in transfusion practice.
- We see it in anticoagulation.
- We see it across cancer pathways.
When the discipline at the centre of medicine is treated as peripheral, systems begin to fail at the edges.”
