Is It Safe to Briefly Stop Anticoagulation After VTE? – RPTH Journal
RPTH Journal shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Lisbeth Eischer et al, adding:
“Is it safe to briefly stop anticoagulation after VTE?
After at least 3 months of anticoagulation for VTE, some strategies recommend off-therapy D-dimer testing to assess recurrence risk, but how safe is temporary discontinuation?
Key takeaways from this systematic review and meta-analysis:
- Early VTE recurrence within 30 days occurred in 1.04% of patients
- No fatal recurrences were reported
- Unprovoked VTE was associated with a higher early recurrence risk
- Brief interruption of anticoagulation for risk assessment appears safe.”
