Mariia Kumskova: Platelet Activation and Spreading Defects in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Mariia Kumskova, Research Assistant Professor at University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”I am elated to share that our paper, ‘Platelet defects in patients and mice with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome,’ has been published in the current issue of Blood at Blood Journals Portfolio and is featured on the journal cover.
In our study, we demonstrate that:
- Platelets in EDS exhibit reduced integrin αIIbβ3 activation, leading to impaired aggregation and spreading
- Platelet dysfunction in EDS is associated with decreased GPVI and PAR1 receptor expression and their impaired downstream signaling
I want to thank every person with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome who contributed to this work.
You are all exceptional and real heroes, and not only for driving for several hours or flying from other states, but for making this a real collaboration and for inspiring us every step of the way!
I also want to thank my remarkable mentors, my PI, Dr. Anil Chauhan, and clinical mentors Dr. Steven Lentz and Dr. Janice Staber, for their patience, support, and guidance.
It takes brilliant minds to take a passionate idea and form it into a beautiful story.
Special thank you to my co-first author, Dr. Gagan D. Flora, Ph.D., for his invaluable work over the years, and to our collaborators, Dr. Steven McKenzie and Dr. James Michael!
And a huge thank you to the scientific community of thrombosis and hemostasis for their continued support!
We couldn’t have done it without you!”
